VPN Providers Targeted by Credit Card Companies

VPN Providers Targeted by Credit Card Companies

Both MasterCard and Visa have recently started taking action against VPN providers by refusing them card access. For instance, Swedish payment provider named Payson has cut access to various anonymizing services after being ordered to do so by the credit card companies.

"It turned out that VPN provider iPredator was one of the customers affected by this action. Its founder, Peter Sunde (who is also one The Pirate Bay founders), said that the company is considering legal action. Apparently, the credit card companies are taking action against VPNs that are linked to peer-to-peer piracy, following similar action from PayPal."

Swedish payment provider explained that it was complying with an urgent requirement from the credit card companies to stop accepting payments for VPN services. Peter Sunde doesn’t believe that the action is connected to piracy – instead, he thinks that it might be an attempt to prevent the public from covering their tracks on the Internet and preventing government spying. Sunder noted that corporations from the United States are forcing non-American companies to stop people protesting privacy encroachments and being anonymous. This allows the NSA spy even more.

Although Sunde’s service has a range of other payment options, The Pirate Bay founder believes it’s an outrage that MasterCard and Visa have for some reason decided to ban a perfectly legitimate technology. iPredator is not the only victim of the action – such companies as Anonine, Mullvad, VPNTunnel, Privatvpn and others are also using Payson's services. As such, Peter Sunde believes they can all join in any legal action.

US ISP Can Monitor File-Sharing Traffic

US ISP Can Monitor File-Sharing Traffic

At the moment, there are quite a few BitTorrent traffic monitoring firms and systems out there, but AT&T seems to make a premiere as the first Internet service provider to get a patent under which the company is allowed to monitor file-sharing traffic.

"The innovative system is supposed to be used by AT&T to predict monitor network congestion before occurring. However, another possible use of it is to check out what material is very popular with pirates on file-sharing portals."

Recently, AT&T has adopted a “six-strikes” anti-piracy program which means that an Internet subscriber alleged of downloading copyrighted content gets 6 warnings before having their Internet connection terminated.

Industry observers have created a chart which allows to better understand how the new system works. According to it, AT&T will maintain RSS feeds of torrents that it could end up downloading and then search through. Although the names of the files will play a huge role in what the system detects as illegal content, it will still go one step further and dig into the file to make sure it is really what it says it is, because everyone knows there can be just a virus hiding under the latest Hollywood blockbuster name.

Apparently, the ISP’s technology will appeal to rights holders because of its possibilities and that they will be able to “convince” the broadband provider (if necessary) to use it as a method to reduce Internet piracy.

Who Is Who in Smartphone Sector

According to the recent statistics, Apple’s overly hyped iPhone is slowly dying and may soon fall behind Microsoft. Indeed, the excessive growth which has characterized Apple sales in the smartphone sector has recently slowed and the company now has only 19% of the market. Some industry observers put this market share figure in perspective and pointed out that the company is currently one point ahead of the much maligned Microsoft.

"In the meanwhile, the winner now is Android, dominating the mobile market and making up almost 60% of those shipments. However, Microsoft.com has patent which Android uses, and therefore makes $8 out of each phone sold, so it is winning in this situation as well.

As for the top manufacture, the first place is taken by Samsung, which grew its volume by 64% annually. Apple takes the second place and is followed by Huawei, LG and ZTE. However, those make up less than 5% of the market share.

The industry experts wonder how Apple not only dropped the ball, but gift wrapped it and gave it to its rivals. One answer is that this wouldn’t be happening if Steve Jobs were alive, but saner appeals suggest that the company simply fears to modify Jobs’ vision. Some experts claim that the iPhone user interface is already 6 years old and needs an urgent refresh. In addition, Apple keeps ignoring the trend for larger displays in premium smartphones.

In the meanwhile, Apple can’t claim that the market is saturated, as global shipments for notebooks, tablets and smartphones were over 308 million in the first quarter of the current year, which represents 37% growth from the same quarter of 2012. The statistics shows that tablets are the fastest growing among the three markets, growing 106% year-over-year to 41.9 million units. Here Apple is still the leader, holding a 46% market share, but it has lost the level of dominance it once enjoyed.

Pak hackers planning attacks on Indian networks
January 06, 2009 10:00 IST
Anti-India elements in Pakistan are planning to attack Indian computer networks, intelligence agencies have warned.
Pakistani hackers are trying out a dry run by hacking popular websites registered there, home ministry sources said on Tuesday.
"Every time the relations between the two countries dampen, Pakistanis start attacking Indian computer networks and this has increased after the Mumbai terror attacks [Images]," a home ministry source said.

Pakistani hackers have created websites such as the www.songs.pk, which are infested with software to hack data from the targeted computers, it said.

"The website www.songs.pk has over 12 lakh Indian users who are downloading stuff from these websites daily," said a cyber expert in the ministry.

With these websites being highly popular, it will take only a few minutes for the hackers to take command of over 12 lakh computers in few minutes and the number of such computers can multiply in every minute, sources said.

"Instead of the existing less harmful virus, new ones such as Botnet and Zoombie can be easily released into the Indian computers, which later on replicate and make the entire server vulnerable," the expert said.

"Nowadays new virus and worms are detected while downloading songs from these websites, which could be just a dry run to manage a bigger attack," he said.

Indian government's websites have proved to be vulnerable in the past.
"Most of the time, these cases are not reported as the server is based in Pakistan and we cannot do anything in this regard," the expert said.

The anti-virus software, too, cannot work in such situation as the virus used in such cyber wars are usually new and the anti-virus software cannot identity and detect it, he said.

"If anti-virus software cannot identify the signature of the virus coming through Internet, it will not detect it and as a result the virus will be downloaded in the computer in spite of such software available in the network," the expert added.
